A meeting that brought together key players in the agri-food sector presented the project “Regional Alliances for the Dissemination of Iron Rich Beans in Latin America and the Caribbean,” aimed at strengthening the agri-food chain of iron-rich beans in Panama.
The event featured the participation of the General Director of the Agricultural Innovation Institute of Panama (IDIAP), Eng. Alexandra Rodríguez, and the National Director of Scientific and Technological Products and Services, Dr. Audino Melgar, who highlighted the importance of linking research with producers to promote food and nutritional security.
Eng. Rodríguez noted that this initiative represents a fundamental step in articulating the agri-food value chain with the National Network of Iron Rich Beans, strengthening collaboration between institutions, technicians, and producers. “With this effort, we are advancing in bringing innovation to the field and promoting an essential food for the nutrition of Panamanian families,” she stated.
The project, funded by FONTAGRO with technical assistance from IDIAP, is coordinated by Licda. Maika Barría, and aims to promote the consumption of iron-rich beans, a nutritious, accessible, and high-value food for vulnerable populations.
As part of the strengthening actions, iron-rich bean seeds were distributed to producers in Cañaveral, Las Minas, and in the Ngäbe Buglé Comarca (Cerro Tula and Hato Chami), reaffirming IDIAP's commitment to sustainable rural development and improved nutrition in Panama.
