IDIAF promotes biofortification to combat malnutrition in the Dominican Republic
The Dominican Institute of Agricultural and Forestry Research (IDIAF) successfully held the technical event “Feeding the Future: Iron-rich Beans for the Dominican Republic, Latin America, and the Caribbean” at the Arroyo Loro Experimental Station in San Juan de la Maguana.
The activity brought together researchers, technicians, producers, and representatives from national and international organizations as part of a project funded by FONTAGRO and IICA aimed at strengthening the dissemination of iron-rich biofortified beans in the region.
During the event, the following topics were highlighted:
The nutritional value of beans in combating iron deficiency
Regional results in Latin America and the Caribbean
Agronomic management of the crop and thrips control
Research advances in Dominican conditions
National and international specialists shared knowledge on nutrition, agricultural productivity, and sustainability.
The executive director of IDIAF, Dr. Eladio Arnaud Santana, emphasized that these initiatives strengthen both the food security of the population and the competitiveness of Dominican producers.
