CATACAMAS, OLANCHO. Producers from the community of Jamasquire, in the municipality of Catacamas, held a Field Day and Bean Fair to promote the adoption of the "Fortified Red" variety, a crop with high nutritional value designed to combat malnutrition and strengthen food security in the region.
The technical event was organized by the Brisas de Talgua Basic Grain Producers Association (ASOPROGRABT), with strategic support from the National Agri-Food Development Program (Pronagro), a branch of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG). This gathering allowed local farmers to exchange knowledge, evaluate demonstration plots, and share the latest advances in the agronomic management of this grain.
A Key Food for School Nutrition
One of the central points of the event was to highlight the social impact of the Fortified Red variety, also known commercially as "Nutritious Honduras." This seed was developed by the Directorate of Agricultural Science and Technology (SAG-Dicta) and officially released in 2024.
Among its main competitive and biological advantages is its 70% higher iron content compared to conventional varieties. According to SAG experts, this high percentage of micronutrients makes the grain an essential input for enriching the diet of the rural population, especially for meeting the nutritional requirements of school-aged children.
With these actions, producer organizations and the government seek to expand the planting of biofortified varieties to ensure not only the profitability of producers in Olancho, but also the health of Honduran families.
