The National Institute for Agricultural Research (INIAP), through its National Roots and Tubers Program – Potato Crop, the Department of Nutrition and Quality, and the Technology Transfer Unit of Chimborazo, organized the Field Day "Greenhouse Gas Measurement in Potato–Pasture Production Systems" as part of the activities of the FONTAGRO Project ATN/RF-21534-RG, "Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions through Conservation Agriculture Practices in Potato–Pasture Systems in Ecuador and Peru."
The event took place in the community of Santa Isabel, Chimborazo Province, Ecuador, and brought together farmers, researchers, technical specialists, students, representatives of public institutions, and international cooperation organizations interested in learning about recent advances in climate change mitigation research for Andean agricultural production systems.
During the tour of the experimental plots, the technical team explained the experimental design and presented the methodologies used for soil physical and chemical sampling, agronomic management of potato crops, and the quantification of carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions using static chamber techniques and gas chromatography. Participants observed each stage of the process, from field sampling to laboratory analysis.
The Field Day also highlighted the principles of Conservation Agriculture, emphasizing practices such as reduced tillage, crop residue management, and permanent soil cover. These strategies aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve soil health, and enhance the sustainability of potato production systems.
The project evaluates different agricultural management practices to generate scientific evidence that identifies production strategies capable of reducing the environmental footprint of potato cultivation without compromising productivity. The findings will support the development of technical recommendations for farmers and decision-makers, promoting more resilient agricultural systems in the face of climate change.
The event also provided an opportunity for knowledge exchange between researchers and producers, strengthening technology transfer and encouraging the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices.
This Field Day is part of the training and outreach activities carried out under the FONTAGRO Project, which promotes collaboration among research institutions in Ecuador and Peru to develop innovative solutions that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from potato–pasture production systems in the Andean region.
