Over three days, INTA Paraná’s Integrated Training Centre hosted around forty research, extension and private advisory professionals for the course “Applying the co-innovation approach to livestock production on natural grasslands”, held as part of the FONTAGRO project. Instructors Santiago Dogliotti, Pablo Soca, Ignacio Paparamborda and Santiago Scarlato (Faculty of Agronomy, Udelar) and Verónica Aguerre (INIA Uruguay) shared Uruguay’s experience in the ecological intensification of family livestock systems based on natural grasslands and discussed how to adapt it to other areas.
Participants valued the change of approach. “Co-innovation really is an alternative to approaches that always prioritize input-based technologies,” said Juan Fonseca, head of INTA’s Feliciano Rural Extension Agency. Susana Boffa, head of the La Paz Rural Extension Agency, highlighted that the methodology helps identify problems and, together with the farmer, redesign the farm: “the farmer and the technician learn together.” A valuable contribution for central and northern Entre Ríos, where family farming accounts for 80% of production units.
