The seed fund "Sustainable intensification in dairy farming" achieved its goal: it gave rise to the regional project "Sustainable Intensification of Dairy Farming" (LACTIS, FTG/RF-15940-RG), executed by INIA Uruguay with CATIE, INTA Argentina and ArgenINTA, with an investment of USD 1,650,500, including USD 400,000 from FONTAGRO. From 12 to 16 March, researchers from eleven countries met at CATIE headquarters in Turrialba, Costa Rica, in a workshop coordinated by Santiago FariΓ±a of INIA Uruguay.
The meeting opened the project's first phase: building a common baseline that describes how the region's countries produce milk. Together they account for 44 million animals in production and more than 500 million hectares of forage. Muhammad Ibrahim, Director General of CATIE, highlighted the initiative's contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals. With a shared language and methodology, the teams will be able to identify opportunities to produce more and better.
