At INIA Remehue in Chile, the livestock adaptation project led by Dr. Marta Alfaro showed progress with grasses (brome) and legumes (Lotus) adapted to new climate conditions. The La Unión Agricultural and Dairy Cooperative (COLUN), with more than 700 member farmers, expressed interest in testing these pastures. At INIA Carillanca in Temuco and in Cochabamba, Bolivia, PROINPA’s forgotten Andean crops project presented its lupin, or tarwi, plots, which will benefit Mapuche farmers and could supply plant protein to the salmon industry. Farmers offered a tasting of tarwi dishes, and the mission saw Tarwix company products on supermarket shelves. Another highlight is forage cactus, with enormous production potential on very marginal soils.
