In April 2017, the first meeting of the Latin American and Caribbean Platform for the Sustainable Intensification of Livestock Production took place. The platform is coordinated by CATIE together with FONTAGRO and the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA). More than 50 experts on livestock systems and climate change discussed the main research topics needed to generate evidence supporting new policies and programs in the region. The platform aims to:
- Develop a coordinated regional research agenda on livestock technologies for adaptation, while minimizing emissions;
- Document and disseminate success stories in sustainable intensification;
- Strengthen the capacities of public and private stakeholders in the sector;
- Contribute to policy formulation;
- Jointly mobilize resources.
The platform targets researchers, extension agents, students, farmer organizations, the private sector and decision-makers. It is expected to indirectly benefit some 4,000 farmers and workers in livestock value chains. That same year, at FONTAGRO’s Annual Technical Monitoring Workshop in Honduras, the network’s teams shared their preliminary results. In addition, training exchanges helped complete more than six postgraduate theses.
