From January 8 to 23, 2015, Chile’s Agricultural Research Institute (INIA) held the network’s first major training activity at its Remehue experimental station in Osorno. The program opened with a two-day workshop on livestock systems research. Topics included diagnosing and characterizing systems, designing improved systems and ex-ante analysis. It was followed by two weeks of theoretical and practical training in gas measurement techniques.
Participants learned to measure nitrous oxide with static chambers and enteric methane with the sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) technique, and to analyze samples by gas chromatography to calculate emissions. The 18 specialists came from Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay and Peru. They represented institutions such as CATIE, Corpoica, DICTA, IDIAP, INIAF, INIAP, INIFAP, INTA, IPTA and UNALM. The instructors included INIA Chile staff who had taken part in the first cooperation project between New Zealand and FONTAGRO.
