FONTAGRO and New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) launched the program “Livestock and Climate Change: Applied Research and Knowledge,” as part of New Zealand’s contribution to the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA). On June 9, 2014, its three projects were approved:
- One on livestock systems in Central America, led by CATIE;
- Another on dairy farming in the Andean Region, led by IICA in Peru;
- A third, executed by FONTAGRO’s Technical Administrative Secretariat, to build networks and capacities across the region.
This third project, “Collaborative research networks on resilient livestock systems,” aims to create a network for sharing information on livestock and climate change, standardize methodologies and promote mutual collaboration. It is organized into three components:
- A coordination committee, with plenary network meetings every 18 months;
- A website to share knowledge;
- A training program on emissions measurement and livestock systems modeling.
More than 20 institutions take part as associates. They include IICA, CATIE, CIPAV, EMBRAPA and PROCISUR, along with the national agricultural research institutes of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Spain, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela, among other countries.
