In April 2016, the network held a workshop in Costa Rica where 25 researchers from 14 Latin American and Caribbean countries were trained in analyzing livestock production systems in the context of climate change. The meeting built on the training that began in Chile. It also strengthened ties between the Central American and Andean project teams, who exchanged experiences at workshops in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru. At those workshops they learned, for example, about collar prototypes for measuring gases directly from animals.
The workshop’s most important outcome was a collective decision: to create the “Latin American and Caribbean Platform for the Sustainable Intensification of Livestock Production.” Its purpose is to promote more productive and sustainable livestock systems and value chains, within a regional strategy for climate change adaptation and mitigation. The network thus moved from training specialists to building a shared agenda for the whole region.
