With the aim of enhancing the technical capacities of producers, technicians, and researchers in the management and establishment of trials for sweet potato (*Ipomoea batatas L.*) cultivation, a workshop was held at the Donoso Experimental Station, located in Huaral, Peru. This event was part of a project co-financed by FONTAGRO: the Regional Network for Genetic Improvement in Latin America and the Caribbean, and took place on March 31 and April 1, 2026.
The workshop, led by Dr. Federico Díaz and Eng. Juan Loayza, researchers from the National Agricultural Innovation Institute (INIA), began with a theoretical session on the fundamental principles for establishing observational trials. Discussions included criteria for selecting genetic materials and essential agronomic practices to improve crop productivity.
The second part of the workshop consisted of a practical phase, which included participatory selection of genetic materials, nursery management, and the establishment of experimental plots. This experience allowed participants to reinforce their acquired knowledge and promote the adoption of technologies focused on sustainable production.
The event brought together agricultural technicians, producers, and representatives from various institutions linked to the agricultural sector in Peru, who emphasized the importance of these training environments to improve the quality of planting material and increase productivity and production in the Latin America and Caribbean region.
This initiative is part of FONTAGRO's efforts to drive agricultural innovation, strengthen the innovative capacity of agriculture in the region, and contribute to food security. Additionally, it promotes resilient production systems and rural community development through the training of professionals and the integration of a regional network of researchers.
