Agriculture uses about 70% of water, which can create tensions with other users when the resource is scarce. To turn this challenge into an opportunity, the project led by UNAN-León brought together farmers and other stakeholders from one banana-growing area in each country in a companion modelling (ComMod) process, with participatory assessments and territorial dialogue platforms based on role-playing games. In total, 378 people took part in 30 workshops and came to understand water problems and the needs of other users.
The process delivered concrete results: the dialogue platforms identified 109 technological and institutional proposals, 29 of which were incorporated into action plans to improve knowledge of water resources, formalize rules for water access and use, innovate farming practices that reduce pressure on the resource, and raise public awareness. In addition, 32 researchers were trained in the ComMod methodology, which will make it possible to replicate the platforms in other areas and reach more families.
