Bananas and plantains, grown alongside perennial crops such as coffee and cocoa, benefit more than one million households in Latin America through income, food and other services. Their productivity depends on a steady water supply: in dry periods the plant stops producing leaves and the cycle lengthens, while excess rainfall can also affect production. With temperatures expected to rise by up to 2°C by 2030, adaptation is key for banana-growing families.
To share what was learned, FONTAGRO held the webinar “Water resource management in banana-growing communities”, in which the project team presented the knowledge and lessons generated with its partners: UNAN-León, IDIAF, Bioversity International, CATIE, farmers’ cooperatives and Lisode, with support from the Inter-American Development Bank and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The webinar recording was made available for anyone wishing to replicate the experience.
