The project’s first product, a baseline monograph prepared by researchers from UNALM, INIAP and partners, describes family cattle farming with strong potential. Cows produce 5 to 7 liters of milk per day at stocking rates of about 2 animal units per hectare, and milk accounts for around 73% of household income. Between 85% and 90% of farms keep trees in their pastures; in San Martín, the legume Gliricidia sepium is present on more than 90% of them.
The study also identifies opportunities: 88.5% of farmers sell to intermediaries, gross margins are around 30% and the average age is over 50. It therefore recommends strengthening silvopastoral systems and producer associations for milk collection, cooling and artisanal processing. These findings will help guide the supplementation trials with agro-industrial residues.
