At its 26th Annual Meeting, FONTAGRO’s Board of Directors approved a new regional project to sustainably intensify dual-purpose cattle farming in the Amazon regions of Peru and Ecuador. The initiative totals USD 600,000:
USD 200,000 from New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), administered by FONTAGRO;
USD 400,000 in in-kind counterpart funding from the participating institutions.
The project will be executed by IICA. Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina (UNALM, Peru) and Ecuador’s National Agricultural Research Institute (INIAP) are co-executors, and New Zealand’s AgResearch is a partner. Its approach is circular: using regional agro-industrial residues to improve cattle diets, raise productivity and reduce enteric methane intensity. It is expected to benefit 500 people directly and 6,490 indirectly.
