The X National Wheat Congress (Congreso Nacional de Trigo) was held in Rosario, Argentina, from 21 to 23 October 2026. Researchers of the FONTAGRO project “Wheat Resilient to Climate Change” (ATN/RF-21535-RG) took part with three posters, a keynote lecture and a talk. Dr. Santiago Álvarez Prado, a project researcher from the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the National University of Rosario (Argentina), served on the organizing committee of the congress.
Drs. Santiago Tamagno and Roxana Savin (University of Lleida, Spain) presented results from a field experiment conducted in Spain as part of Component 2 of the project. In this trial, heat waves were imposed on three commercial genotypes using transparent polyethylene tents, either before anthesis (at booting) or after anthesis (10 days after anthesis). Heat waves reduced yield by 15.2 % when imposed before anthesis and by 19.3 % when imposed after anthesis.
Dr. Paula Silva (INIA La Estanzuela, Uruguay) and colleagues presented a study on the effect of Ppd-1 genes, which regulate photoperiod sensitivity, under contrasting photoperiods and high temperatures. The field experiment was conducted at INIA La Estanzuela with isogenic lines combining sensitive and insensitive alleles in three genetic backgrounds.
The third poster presented the project, carried out by the University of Lleida (Spain), INIA La Estanzuela (Uruguay) and the National University of Rosario (Argentina). It described the three project components, the first results and the planned activities. In addition, Dr. Roxana Savin gave the lecture “Wheat yield physiology in the face of environmental challenges” as an invited speaker. Dr. Andrés Berger (INIA La Estanzuela, Uruguay) was also an invited speaker and gave the talk “Uptake curve, potential growth and late nitrogen management: the OptiFert-N approach”.
The abstracts of all works presented at the congress are available here (in Spanish).
