Focused on biologicals as a solution for more sustainable agriculture in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), this FONTAGRO webinar was a success.
The event was made possible with the support of organizations such as the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA), AgResearch, and Lincoln University of New Zealand, along with several organizations, research institutes, and universities in the region such as the Center for Advanced Studies in Arid Zones (CEAZA), the Regional Ministry of Agriculture of Coquimbo (SRMAC) and the Agricultural Society of the North (SAN) of Chile, the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA), the National University of Río Cuarto (UNRC) and CERES-Demeter of Argentina, the Colombian Corporation of Agricultural Research (AGROSAVIA), the Clemente Estable Biological Research Institute (IIBCE), the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA), FAGRO – UdelaR, the Latin American Association of Rhizobiology (ALAR), and the Foundation to Support the Clemente Estable Institute (FAICE) of Uruguay.
The main objective of this webinar was to share the importance of using biologicals such as biofertilizers, biopesticides, and biocontrol agents based on beneficial microorganisms in LAC agriculture. The significant impact of this biotechnology in the region was highlighted, as well as opportunities for improvement related to its effectiveness, application, and registration for commercial use.
During the event, key actions were proposed across the production chain. These included the implementation of a scientific-technological cooperation network among participating laboratories to evaluate the effectiveness and traceability of various biologicals at the field level. Furthermore, the importance of assessing the response of different crops to prototype biologicals and promoting knowledge exchange among various actors in the agricultural sector was emphasized.
