The “4 per 1000” initiative, launched at COP21, proposes raising carbon in the top 40 cm of soil by 0.4% each year. Until now, countries in the region relied on IPCC default values calculated for the whole world. The platform sets out to answer four questions:
How much carbon can each soil store, given its climate?
How close are current production systems to that level?
Which practices help close the gap?
What economic benefit do farmers gain by applying them?
