From 14 to 18 May, a FONTAGRO mission visited the project “Strengthening water resource management in banana-growing communities: greater resilience to climate variability” in Nicaragua, led by the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (UNAN-León) and co-financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). In Jinotega, farmers growing coffee with bananas and shade trees took part in a “concertation and consensus” simulation exercise to analyse how water flows affect their coffee, banana and staple grain systems.
As a result, participants reached agreements on investments and joint practices between farms to reduce water pollution, diversify crops, and improve productivity and incomes. The process involves 97 small and medium-scale farmers from the Monte Cristo, América, El Sardinal and El Sarayal cooperatives, who now have an engaging, hands-on assessment of water quantity and quality in the face of climate variability.
