To strengthen food security among rural and indigenous communities, Agrosavia, led by researcher Ph.D. Adriana Tofiño Rivera from the Motilonia Research Center, in collaboration with the Umata Office in the municipality of Becerril, delivered an important package of seeds to the Yukpa indigenous community this Monday.
The following were distributed:
- 175 kg of biofortified red beans, variety 43
- 40 kg of beans adapted to the dry Caribbean
These seeds come from the Kolfaci project and aim to improve the nutrition of the Yukpa population, especially their children, who are in a crucial stage of psychomotor development. ⚖👶 This nutritious legume is rich in iron and zinc, essential minerals for the physical and intellectual development of children.
RECOGNITION AND CALL TO ACTION FROM THE YUKPA COMMUNITY 🗣
Indigenous leader Davidson Restrepo expressed gratitude to AGROSAVIA and the municipal administration of Mayor Fabián Martínez for their constant support from the Umata office. However, he also called for greater commitment from other entities like Corpocesar to integrate into processes for the conservation and repopulation of key species for the Yukpa ecosystem, such as the howler monkey, which is essential in their food chain.
Additionally, Restrepo called to promote the cultivation of cariaco corn, 🌽 a traditional and fundamental food in their diet. He emphatically rejected past projects involving cattle ranching 🐄 directed toward these communities, stating that the Yukpa do not have a vocation for livestock and that efforts should therefore focus on productive agricultural projects.
INSTITUTIONAL COMMITMENT FROM UMATA BECERRIL ✅
Official Donay Florián from the Umata of Becerril reiterated the support and follow-up that the administration provides to all agricultural processes in these indigenous communities. She emphasized that these actions are essential to reduce the nutrition gap among the Yukpa population in the municipality.
