As part of the activities developed by the FONTAGRO project for the promotion of more sustainable and resilient livestock systems, seedlings of Leucaena diversifolia were delivered to three characterized farms in the department of Cauca, Colombia, including La Samaria, El Rubí, and El Tablón. The purpose was to strengthen the implementation of silvopastoral systems and improve the productivity of dairy production systems.
The delivered seedlings, approximately six months old, are in suitable condition for establishment in pastures and areas designated for fodder production. Their incorporation will increase the supply of high-quality feed for livestock, especially during periods of lower pasture availability, contributing to the productive stability of dairy farms.
The integration of fodder tree species like leucaena is a fundamental strategy for transforming conventional livestock systems into more efficient and environmentally friendly models. These species provide multiple benefits to the soil by contributing organic matter, promoting biological activity, improving physical structure, and increasing nutrient availability through biological nitrogen fixation. As a result, natural soil fertility is enhanced, and dependence on external inputs is reduced.
In addition to their contributions to soil resources, Leucaena diversifolia is recognized for its high protein content and good digestibility, characteristics that make it a high-nutritional-value fodder supplement for dairy cattle. Its inclusion in grazing systems helps improve nutrient intake, increase milk production, and optimize animal feed efficiency.
Another significant benefit is the provision of shade within pastures, which promotes animal welfare by reducing thermal stress and improving comfort conditions for livestock. Furthermore, the presence of trees contributes to biodiversity conservation, water regulation, and carbon sequestration, key aspects for adaptation and mitigation in the face of climate change.
The delivery of these seedlings represents a significant step in consolidating silvopastoral systems on the participating farms of the project, promoting more productive, profitable, and environmentally responsible livestock farming. Through such actions, FONTAGRO continues to strengthen the transfer of sustainable technologies that contribute to rural development and the improvement of dairy farming competitiveness in the department of Cauca, Colombia.
