Following the San Salvador meeting, the project “Laying the foundations for a Regional Early Warning System for Coffee Rust” held its second workshop in Jamaica. There, the expert network and representatives of the region’s coffee institutes reviewed and validated the results of the first meeting: the formation of the network, the summary of early warning experiences in the region, and the conceptual model of an improved system adapted to the coffee sector.
The network brings together specialists in coffee growing, pest and disease management, meteorology, statistics, epidemiology and communication, who contribute a comprehensive perspective to the system. Beyond weather and agronomic data, the validated model incorporates socio-economic and geographical variables to generate recommendations tailored to each farm and each farmer. That same year, the project presented its progress to FONTAGRO’s Board of Directors in La Ceiba, Honduras.
