In October 2019, the project “Laying the foundations for a Regional Early Warning System for Coffee Rust” concluded with a workshop at which its results were presented to the expert network and to representatives of the Central American Program for Integrated Coffee Rust Management (PROCAGICA), implemented by IICA with European Union funding. The systematization report was handed over to PROCAGICA coordinator Harold Gamboa: a document that brings together the region’s expert knowledge and best experiences and now serves as a guide for the system’s implementation phase.
The project leaves behind a committed regional network of specialists, a theoretical early warning model adapted to coffee, an agreed expert system, and a regulatory assessment with recommendations for each country. Its main message is that the system must protect coffee-growing families, not only the crop, with comprehensive recommendations that address agronomic, social, economic and environmental aspects and adapt to each farm’s situation. The region’s coffee institutes see this tool as a highly valuable instrument for strengthening farmers’ resilience.
