In Popayán and Honduras’ Dry Corridor, the innovation platforms moved forward with a participatory, multi-step process. First, farmers and technicians assessed the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges of their farms and the constraints to innovation. They then prioritized technological and organizational options and assessed them with the CSA performance calculator under different climate scenarios. This tool simulates their effect on food security, resilience and greenhouse gas emissions.
The selected options were tested with 30 farmers per site through farmer field schools, farm visits and farmer-to-farmer exchanges. With additional funding from the Agropolis Foundation and the CGIAR’s CCAFS program, the project validated ten innovations:
- Water reservoirs and rainwater harvesting;
- A family rope pump;
- Home gardens, compost and a solar dryer;
- Improved varieties of sorghum, maize, beans and avocado.
In Honduras, the work was carried out together with DICTA and SAG.
