Founded in 1998 as an alliance of 15 countries, Fontagro contributes to innovation in family farming by promoting competitiveness and food security. Its projects generate innovations that are regional public goods for usufruct of the countries. 

(Washington, D. C., May 8th, 2018) The twentieth anniversary celebration of the creation of FONTAGRO, a unique financing mechanism for innovation projects of family farming in Latin America, the Caribbean and Spain, will take place on June 4 at the headquarters of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in Washington.

The event will be chaired by Armando Bustillo, president of FONTAGRO, together with the sponsors: the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), represented by its general director, Manuel Otero, and the IDB. Present and Future of Public and Private Financing for the Agricultural Sector of Latin America and the Caribbean, and Agriculture and the Agenda of the future 2030-2050 will be two of the themes discussed at the event.

Fontagro will also present the publication 20 years supporting the innovation of family farming in Latin America , The Caribbean and Spain.

Supported by the IDB and the Global Environment Facility, the III Symposium on Adaptation to Climate Change of Family Farming will happen within the framework of the XIII Technical Project Monitoring Workshop of FONTAGRO that will take place from June 5 to 8, 2018. IDB, IICA, FONTAGRO authorities, researchers and directors of agricultural research institutions of the Latin American region, together with colleagues from the sector, will meet at the Workshop to present the results and advances of innovation projects.

ABOUT FONTAGRO

FONTAGRO is a unique regional cooperation mechanism that promotes family agriculture, competitiveness, and food security. It was established in 1998 and it includes fifteen member countries that have contributed a capital of some $100 million. FONTAGRO is sponsored by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA). Its Technical Administrative Secretariat is based at IDB headquarters in Washington, D.C. FONTAGRO has cofinanced more than 138 projects and initiatives in its member countries for an approximate amount of $105.5 million, including contributions from other sources of funding and executing agencies. Its member countries are Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Spain, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
