Under its 2015 Call for Proposals, FONTAGRO approved the project “Technological innovations to build resilient livelihoods for farming families in the Dry Corridor” (FTG/RF-15462-RG), implemented by Nicaragua’s National Union of Farmers and Ranchers (UNAG) together with Honduras’s Regional Association of Agricultural Services of the East (ARSAGRO), Heifer International, the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and the Nicaraguan Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA). With an investment of USD 1,000,000, including USD 400,000 from FONTAGRO, the three-year initiative aims to increase the climate resilience of 3,600 farming families.
The project will work on four fronts: participatory breeding of landrace and locally adapted maize and bean varieties, agroecological good practices adapted to climate change, a participatory agroclimatic information system, and public-private partnerships in the value chains of both crops. Families will thus be able to use improved seed, make decisions based on climate information and access better markets, in a region where cyclical droughts affect 467,000 families.
