The initiative was born at FONTAGRO’s 22nd Board of Directors meeting, held in Guayaquil in 2018. A year later, from October 16 to 18, 2019, AGROSAVIA hosted the regional workshop “Gene editing in crops and livestock for Latin America and the Caribbean” in Bogotá. Experts from seven countries took part, with INIA Chile, INIA Uruguay, INTA Argentina and INIAP Ecuador as co-executing institutions and PROCISUR as associate. Public agencies and private companies also attended. Each country presented its breeding programs and how it plans to use gene editing.
