The project “Organic carbon sequestration in soils of Latin America and the Caribbean” brings together INIA Uruguay, AGROSAVIA, INIA Chile, INTA Argentina and INTA Costa Rica. It has a total investment of USD 1.46 million: USD 200,000 from FONTAGRO, USD 280,000 from New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries and the rest from partner institutions. Its goals are to:
analyze about 1,800 soil samples across the region;
build a database so countries can report their soil carbon using more precise IPCC standards;
identify one sequestration opportunity per country, along with its effect on farm economics;
train technicians in measurement methods and simulation models.
