
A regional soybean trial network to identify better-adapted cultivars and support sustainable production decisions.
In recent decades, South America has recorded the fastest growth in soybean production and has consolidated its role as a key player in the international market for soybeans, oil, and protein meals. Brazil leads global soybean exports, and Argentina is the world’s leading exporter of soybean-derived products, while Paraguay, Bolivia, and Uruguay are emerging as strategic producers. However, the crop faces challenges related to climate risk, restrictions on expanding agricultural area, rising costs, and the need to improve resource efficiency. In this context, closing yield gaps through objective and comparable information is essential.

Regional Network of Comparative Soybean Yield Trials for Latin America
The initiative seeks to reduce the gap between actual yields and water-limited potential yields by optimizing cultivar selection and agronomic management in Latin America. To this end, it proposes developing comparative soybean yield trial networks in the participating countries under a unified protocol, with the aim of identifying cultivars better adapted to each specific environment. The proposal builds on Argentina’s RECSO experience, based on public-private governance, standardized methodology, shared financing, technical quality, objective results, and the active transfer of information to the production sector.
It is expected to establish national networks and a regional network of comparative soybean yield trials under standardized protocols, evaluating genotypes from different maturity groups in more than 180 environments throughout the project. The initiative will generate a baseline for each country, a unified protocol manual, regional databases with environmental and crop variables, and analyses of genotypic, environmental, and G×E interaction effects. It is also expected to identify cultivars with better performance and stability by environment, calibrate and validate simulation models, develop an interactive online platform, and produce reports, newsletters, outreach articles, and social media content. The estimated direct beneficiaries include approximately 5,000 producers, 15 seed companies, 500 technical advisors, and research and extension staff from the NARIs.
