On February 13th, the webinar "Genetic Gains in Sorghum: Opportunities to Increase Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability" was successfully held. This event brought together distinguished international experts from organizations such as Corteva, the University of Florida, INTA Costa Rica, and INTA Argentina, who addressed various topics, including the global context of sorghum, opportunities to accelerate genetic improvement, and the integration of this crop into the production systems of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).
During the session, it was highlighted how different sorghum genotypes can adapt to varying environmental conditions and how this adaptability is driving the development of emerging markets. Additionally, the increase in cultivated areas was discussed, contributing to the creation of stable production zones in different regions of the world.
The importance of genetic resistance in sorghum was also emphasized, as it not only enhances productivity but also promotes agricultural sustainability. For example, the development of herbicide-tolerant sorghum hybrids facilitates better weed control, effectively addressing farmers' needs and contributing to more sustainable cultivation practices.
International collaboration was a central theme, underscoring the crucial role of organizations like FONTAGRO, which supports initiatives and enables the creation of wide networks for research and innovation in the region. The need to continue exploring and supporting research in sorghum, a key crop for the sustainable future of agro-food systems in LAC, was emphasized.
