Jorge Ganoza Roncal, Vice President of FONTAGRO and Director of INIA Peru, took an active role in Science Week, a landmark gathering held from April 7 to 12 in Nairobi, Kenya, where more than 10,000 delegates, including farmers, scientists, policymakers, partners, and funders, came together both in person and online.
This year’s Science Week focused on the central theme of “Innovation and partnerships for a food, nutrition, and climate secure future.” Humanity currently faces critical opportunities and urgent needs for transformation in key areas such as climate change, food security, and rural community resilience. In this context, science and innovation emerge as vital tools to address these global challenges and build a more sustainable future.
The event was co-hosted by CGIAR and the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), bringing together leading scientists and decision-makers in the fields of agriculture, climate, and health. During Plenary 3, Segment 2: “Harvesting Innovation – Latin America and the Caribbean,” Ganoza highlighted Peru’s multiple opportunities as a center of origin and agricultural diversity. He also emphasized the importance of collaborating with both regional and international networks to strengthen innovation in agri-food systems and promote knowledge exchange.
In his remarks, Ganoza stressed that international collaboration, such as existing partnerships with CGIAR and other organizations, is essential for enhancing the resilience and sustainability of agri-food systems in the region. He also underscored the key role of FONTAGRO as a unique mechanism for sustainable co-financing in science, technology, and innovation for the agricultural sector in Latin America and the Caribbean, offering a robust research platform that brings together 15 member countries to address strategic issues through collaborative networks.
CGIAR Science Week 2025 has established itself as a critical platform for inspiring action, advancing research, and building strategic alliances to ensure strong investment in sustainable food systems, essential for both human well-being and planetary health, fully aligned with FONTAGRO’s mission.
