Eugenia Saini, Executive Secretary of FONTAGRO, participated in the 22nd Biennial ARD Research Symposium, held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in New Orleans. This event brought together global leaders and the 1890 Universities Foundation and focused on how to sustainably feed the world.
During her speech, Saini shared a crucial message: “Food security is no longer just an agricultural issue; it is a geopolitical, economic, and national security priority. With over 700 million people facing food insecurity and a slowdown in global investment in agricultural R&D, it is essential to rethink our strategies for collaboration, investment, and scaling innovations, not only to increase production but also to improve nutrition.”
Saini emphasized that “our food systems are deeply interconnected. Hemispheric collaboration is not optional; it is essential.” Through FONTAGRO and with the support of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), a platform has been built that connects countries, institutions, and the private sector to co-invest in scientific solutions for agriculture. “This model has demonstrated for nearly 30 years that regional cooperation can mobilize resources, accelerate innovation, and generate a real impact on farmers and food systems.”
The symposium, celebrating 50 years of innovations in research, gathered over 1,500 participants and presented more than 500 research papers and posters. Saini also highlighted the importance of strengthening partnerships with Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) to unlock private investments and scale innovation through coordinated efforts across multiple countries.
The ARD 2026 Symposium focused on “Innovations in Food, Health & Agriculture: Technological Advancements, Ecological Resilience, & Economic Sustainability”. This event provided opportunities for scientists and students to present their innovative and practical findings in the field of food and agricultural sciences, aiming to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange among the 1890 Institutions community.
