Patricio Grassini, Professor of Agronomy at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, leads the Global Yield Gap Atlas—the world’s leading platform for estimating the gap between current and potential yields for major crops. In this Science Café, he will explain how these estimates are generated—from the field level to the global scale—by combining crop models, local data, and machine learning. He will also present insights into opportunities for sustainable intensification across different regions of the world. He will be joined by Fernando Aramburu Merlos, a research professor at the same university, who led the development of the Atlas's high-resolution global potential yield maps and a specialized application for maize in Latin America.
