Executive Summary

Pests and diseases cause significant losses in the world food supply, while hundreds of millions of family farmers depend on agriculture to survive. The cultivation of fruit trees is economically very important for the development of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) countries, not only for their nutritional quality, but also because it generates jobs. There are numerous quarantine diseases that threaten fruit tree production in LAC, having caused million dollar losses in other producing regions. Increasing globalization, increased international trade, and climate change are expanding the borders of diseases, facilitating their spread. On the other hand, greater social and market conditions of pesticide use modulate the study of diseases that affect crops and represent a challenge in the design of new control strategies. The generation and application of technologies (AgTech) for the early detection and prevention of diseases in the region, under the slogan of applying good practices with low environmental impact, represents an opportunity to prevent the entry and spread of new diseases, and therefore important yield losses, very high eradication costs and non-tariff export barriers. The objective of this proposal is to create a collaborative network for the prevention and control of quarantine diseases of fruit trees in the region.

The technological solution

International collaborative network for the prevention and detection of quarantine diseases (Fusarium TR4, Sharka, Xyllela and Phytoplasmas) in fruit trees (banana, plum, peach, apple, pear, olive and vine) that enables increased regional technological capacity through the exchange of scientific knowledge and experiences.

Creation of a collaborative network between LAC countries in order to prevent and detect quarantine diseases in fruit trees
