Executive Summary

The Regional Fund for Agricultural Technology (FONTAGRO), together with its sponsors the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), held the 2012 Successful Innovation Contest for Family Farming. The purpose was to document successful experiences and lessons learned and contribute to a better understanding of the innovation process in family farming in the region. This Call had funds provided by FONTAGRO and IICA, which could be complemented with additional technical cooperation resources provided by other agencies related to the mission of the Fund. The initiative was approved by the Board of Directors (BD) of the Fund to help systematize the successful experiences of innovators throughout the agricultural chains, and disseminate these cases widely both in the region and outside it. FONTAGRO also hopes to educate decision-makers on the importance of investing resources in favor of agricultural innovation, publicizing the lessons and success factors.
