At the end of February, a technical team from INIA Carillanca Regional Centre conducted a site visit to the 4-hectare farm called “La Finca,” located in Icalma. The farm, owned by the Toro Nahuelcura family, is characterized by steep terrain and eroded soils, larguely due to animal activity.
One of the first actions taken by the family was the construction of perimeter fences to restrict free movement and grazing of livestock. This measure has resulted in an increased soil coverage, fostering the growth of a greater variety of herbaceous species and enhancing the production of dry matter.
In collaboration with the community, soil samples were collected for physical and chemical analysis, and herbaceous species typical of the exclusion areas, along with their production, were identified. These data provide valuable information to improve the productive management of the farm, identifying both critical points and strengths that will contribute to the sustainability of the property.
This initial visit is part of an ongoing diagnostic effort to identify and implement environmental practices that adapt production systems to the challenges of climate change. The ultimate goal is to reduce the vulnerability of agricultural land and improve its resilience.
