Silvopastoral Systems Training Events Continue: International Congress and Webinar

Published at: 19 February 2025

To end 2024 with a flourish, sustainable livestock experts from different parts of the world met at two events held in Peru and Colombia to share their knowledge and experiences.

INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS: SILVOPASTORAL SYSTEMS AND REPRODUCTIVE BIOTECHNOLOGIES – SAN MARTÍN PERU

In an effort to promote livestock sustainability and environmental conservation, the International Congress on Silvopastoral Systems and Reproductive Biotechnologies was held in the region of San Martín, Peru. The event, which brought together national and international experts, farmers, researchers and local authorities, took place from December 18 to 20, 2024 in the city of Tarapoto.

The congress was organized by PROMEG Tropical of the National Institute of Agrarian Innovation (INIA), and co-organized by the project Multipurpose Silvopastoral Systems and Family Livestock Farming in Peru and Colombia financed by FONTAGRO, with the main objective of disseminating knowledge about silvopastoral systems, a practice that combines trees, pastures and livestock in the same productive unit, contributing to improving productivity, animal welfare and climate resilience, in addition to reproduction issues.
During the event, keynote presentations, practical workshops and round tables were held that addressed topics such as:

• Environmental benefits: mitigation of climate change, soil conservation and recovery of degraded ecosystems.
• Economic impacts: increased profitability for producers and income diversification.
• Innovative technologies: integrated pasture management, selection of tree species and efficient use of water.

Among the most prominent speakers were Dr. Danilo Pezo, Dr. Manuel Rosemberg, and Dr. Jean Savian, along with the project coordinator in Peru, Dr. Carlos Gómez Bravo, and the associated researcher, Dr. Julio Alegre Orihuela, all faculty members of the National Agrarian University La Molina (UNALM). They shared success stories and best practices implemented in the San Martín region, as well as in other regions of Peru and Latin America.

This congress marks an important step towards the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices in the San Martín region, which is positioned as a benchmark in the implementation of innovative strategies to face the challenges of climate change and food security.

International Webinar “Reducing the carbon footprint in livestock farming: Practical Strategies”

As part of the objectives of the project “Multipurpose silvopastoral systems and family livestock farming” financed by Fontagro and executed by Agrosavia of Colombia and UNALM of Peru, the International Webinar called “Reducing the carbon footprint in livestock farming: Practical Strategies” was held, broadcast on the Agrosavia TV channel on YouTube, and whose objective was to socialize the methodological advances for measuring carbon capture and practical strategies for reducing GHG in livestock farming. The event was held in two sessions on December 12 and 13, 2024 and was attended by 10 researchers from countries such as Peru, Colombia and Brazil. The topics addressed were Carbon Sequestration in tropical livestock soils, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) mitigation in tropical livestock systems and Carbon Neutral Livestock Farming, a Sustainable Future.
