On October 31, an agreement was formalized between the Nehuen Co Mapuche community and representatives of the technological co-innovation project in the El Chaiful area, located in the Patagonian steppe of Río Negro, approximately 65 kilometers southeast of Ingeniero Jacobacci.
This agreement promotes resource management with an intercultural perspective, bridging local communities and agricultural science and technology institutions such as INTA and CONICET.
The agreement establishes clear and ambitious foundations, prioritizing key principles such as:
- Defined objectives: A transparent approach to the project’s goals.
- Specific roles: Clear responsibilities for all parties involved.
- Innovation with identity: Innovation Units (IUs) selected under strict technical and community-based criteria.
- Community collaboration: Local leaders designated to manage the IUs.
- Respectful communication: Each stage of the project will be agreed upon to reflect the community’s vision and values.
- Promotion of local development.
In the first phase, three Innovation Units were defined, focusing on:
- Sheep production.
- Cattle production.
- Forage cultivation for animal supplementation.
The second phase, set to begin next February, will focus on detailed characterization and the implementation of technologies tailored to local needs.
This agreement not only represents a significant step toward productive sustainability in the region but also reinforces the commitment to the cultural identity and autonomy of the Mapuche communities. The collaboration promises to have a significant impact on both the economy and the preservation of natural resources in the Patagonian steppe.
