Despite being one of the most important activities in Colombia's agricultural sector, cattle ranching exhibits low productivity indicators. While cattle farming performance is influenced by various factors, the sector's vulnerability to the effects of climate variability has been a significant barrier to establishing a sustainable production system.
To adapt cattle ranching to this changing world, the implementation of Silvopastoral Systems (SPS) has been proposed. These systems convert pastures with grasses and soils suffering from degradation due to poor management into an enriched system with native woody species that provide various environmental services. These benefits include improving carbon sequestration, conserving biodiversity, and supplying high-protein forage year-round, which ensures the sustainability of the production system.
Research on SPS has made significant progress in recent years. For this reason, Agrosavia is conducting a series of talks focused on sustainable livestock farming. Each month, two guests present short talks on topics such as SPS design in both lowland and highland tropics, the environmental benefits of these systems, and their impact on meat and milk quality, among others.
To date, three "Winning Duos" have been held, which can be viewed on the Agrosavia TV YouTube channel and are shared in this note:
Session 1. How to Integrate Plant Diversity in Silvopastoral Systems
Session 2. Silvopastoral Systems and Their Contribution to Agroecosystem Life
Session 3. Technology in Livestock Farming to Improve Products and Decision-Making
The final session will take place on November 28, covering topics related to managing agricultural businesses with a focus on sustainable livestock farming.
We look forward to your participation.
