The first project workshop was held in the Frutillar region of Chile. The five participating countries met to coordinate activities, develop sampling protocols and plan activities.
On May 11 and 12, the first workshop and seminar was held: Capacity building to determine COS stocks by NIRS spectroscopy. INIA Chile was the organizer of the event that took place in the Los Lagos region.
Researchers and authorities from the 5 executing and co-executing institutions participated in the workshop and seminar. We also had the participation of researchers from the Universidad de Concepción and the private sector.
Dr. Mario Sanhueza, a specialist in the field of spectrometry, gave a seminar on "Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS): An economic and non-destructive tool for the analysis of solid matrices", and "Techniques for the development of predictive quantification models through NIRS spectroscopy". The following presentations were given by researchers from the University of Concepción, Dr. Erick Zagal, from the Universidad de la Frontera, Dr. Francisco Matus and Denisse Zamorano, from the Universidad de Chile.
During the seminar on the 12th, the speakers presented on soil carbon dynamics, carbon sequestration and its stabilization mechanisms, in the afternoon Professor Matus presented on the question: "Are clay and silt fractions the main factors for soil carbon accumulation?", and to close the workshop we visited Denisse's postdoctoral work trial "Carbon Farming Project in livestock and no-tillage systems in southern Chile. Visual inspection of a soil profile of volcanic origin".
The workshop has been very productive, both in academic terms, as very enriching discussions have been generated, and at the level of strengthening ties and interpersonal relationships within the multi-agency platform generated at the beginning of the project.
