Study of the prevalence of avian coccidiosis in family productions of meat and eggs, localized in the peri-urban region of Buenos Aires, Argentina and Santiago de Chile, Chile. Nov 2021-May 2022.
Avian coccidiosis is the parasitosis that generates the greatest loss in poultry production worldwide. So far, both in Argentina and Chile, there is no record of coccidiosis in family poultry production, therefore, its study is essential for understanding the problem. A demonstration of family meat and egg production farms that will have between 50-1,500 animals was carried out, in the suburbs of Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile. The samples of fecal matter, guano and litter, as appropriate to the productions, were taken in a representative way from each pen. The traditional microscopic diagnosis was made by flotation of oocysts in sodium chloride and in duplicate the count of oocysts per gram of sample in a McMaster chamber. In the period of Nov 2021-May 2022 in the productions studied, a 95% prevalence could be observed in 17 meat productions and an 80% prevalence of 52 egg productions. For the first time, avian coccidiosis is studied in family productions.
