Livestock protection dog

Published at: 20 April 2022

Angelica and Miguel acquired a protection dog to reduce goat losses due to puma and fox attacks.

The Extension Agencies of INTA Chos Malal and Zapala, with FONTAGRO and INTA funding, carried out a field work day for the training and delivery of a trained protection dog to a breeding family in the north of the Province of Neuquén, Argentina. This action is part of the FONTAGRO project that aims to adapt livestock systems to climate change. The family and its system function as a field demonstrator of technological innovations for the region.

The objective of this technological innovation is to reduce predation by pumas and foxes, using livestock protection dogs. This is a non-lethal predation control method that acts as a deterrent to predators and thus protects production without affecting the local fauna.

The training was attended by local goats raising families that have been affected by the increase in predation and are looking for an environmentally friendly alternative to adapt to this new situation.

From INTA and within the framework of the project, we accompany and help them in the incorporation of this new technology.
