The INIA-Chile team participating in the project and led by Dr. Francisco Salazar has started the tests to measure emissions of N2O and NH3 from the soil, by applying feces and urine from dairy cows fed with and without alfalfa.
The NH3 and N2O measurements will last 12 and 50 days respectively, from the application of the excreta. However, the trial will continue for a longer time as forage production will be evaluated.
The study is carried out by this research team is part of activity 2.3 greenhouse gas emission of the Sustainable Intensification of Livestock Systems with Legumes project. The objective of this activity is to quantify the effect of the incorporation of legumes on the emissions of N2O and CH4 from the soil, and on the enteric CH4 emissions of cattle.
