The Global Research Alliance funded her stay under a CLIFF-GRADS grant
During the second half of 2019, Gabriela Perez, Ph.D. fellow and member of the “Use of Legumes in Livestock Systems in Latin America and the Caribbean” project, completed a 6-month research visit at Bangor University, in Wales, under the supervision of Prof Dr. David Chadwick. The project in which she participated in, "Understanding N2O emission controls in grazed systems in the highlands and lowlands" is closely related to the topic she studies in her Ph.D. thesis in Argentina, where she analyzes the N2O emissions caused by excreta deposition.
With the support of "the urine patch research team" at the Environment Center Wales, Gabriela conducted a field experiment, with a 3-months gas sampling. This investigation aimed to study the complex interaction between the urine volume and its nitrogen concentration, as regulating variables of N2O emission in the urine patches deposited in the lowlands. The fellow received training in the use of high-tech lab equipment, the design of experiments, and the writing of projects and scientific articles in English.
This research has obtained interesting results that are now being analyzed and will be written in a scientific article soon. These outcomes will be a great contribution to the general objectives of the project.
