On July 14, technicians Juan Pablo Mikuc, Marcelo Bosetti, Ivan Centelles and Alejandro Mogni gave a talk on cashmere goat fiber collection.
Within the framework of the COVID-19 pandemic, the FONTAGRO project "Innovation and intensification for adaptation to climate change in extensive family livestock farming" has developed an agenda of radio programs and webinars with the objective of bringing the knowledge produced (or in production) closer to rural families, technicians and the general public. In this context, on July 14, 2020, the webinar "Cashmere goat fiber harvest" was held.
Extension technicians Juan Pablo Mikuc, Marcelo Bosetti, Ivan Centelles and Alejandro Mogni, from the Chos Malal Rural Extension Agency of INTA (province of Neuquén) gave a lecture on the importance of using the cashmere fiber of the Creole goats of northern Neuquén.
The talk began with a brief characterization of cashmere fiber, with emphasis on the cashmere of Creole goats from the north of Neuquén. General concepts to be taken into account for an adequate harvest were described, highlighting the combing method as the most appropriate for the Neuquén mountain range area.
The recommendations for a good harvest should be based on a correct choice of the animal categories to be combed, taking into account the time of the year and the sanitary and nutritional status of the animals.
Subsequently, the proper way to harvest the fiber was described, using a special comb manufactured for this activity and carrying out practices that go hand in hand with animal welfare.
Finally, recommendations were made regarding the conditioning of the harvested fiber and the companies that will purchase the fiber in the 2020 season were presented.
This activity was framed in actions carried out in the center and north of Neuquén by technicians from INTA Chos Malal with the support of FONTAGRO and the support of several institutions of the province of Neuquén.
The audience was wide and diverse with regional public and participants from other regions of Argentina and Chile.
