Gutiérrez is Colombian and has a 12-year career within CATIE, an institution in which she completed a Master's Degree in Comprehensive Management of Natural Resources with an emphasis on Management and Conservation of Biodiversity, in 1996.
She is a Biologist from the National University of Colombia and also has a Ph.D. in Rural Sociology from Iowa State University, a degree he earned in 2005.
As a result of her preparation and experience, she has held various positions within CATIE, including: leader and coordinator of the Mesoamerican Agro-environmental Program (January 2009-June 2013); academic coordinator of the Master in Environmental Socioeconomics (January 2007-December 2010); and specialist in Social Sciences (September 2005 to date). Likewise, since 2013 she has worked as a Gender and Social Equity specialist and director of the Academic Program in Practice of Development and Conservation of the Center.
