Ruben Verges joined INIA, CIAAB of Uruguay in 1967 as a Field Assistant in Crops, where he quickly developed a huge passion for plants, crops and wheat. This led him to successfully face and overcome, with much sacrifice, the career of Agricultural Engineer. After completing his career, his passion and vocation brought him back to La Estanzuela, but this time as a coach.
In 1977, he entered the Seed area and, after a few years, he was reassigned to the cultivation area, specifically to take responsibility for leading the Wheat Genetic Improvement Program, a position he held until his retirement in 2009.
From his beginnings as an assistant to his passage through the Regional Directorate, but especially his long and successful career at the head of the Wheat Program, Ruben sowed work, effort, sacrifice, dedication, meticulousness and respect. He garnered friendship and recognition at the national and regional level. He had that special gift of those chosen few who have the ability to create and that is how he harvested more than 35 varieties that reached a commercial scale, some of which were great successes within the first year of planting. Several of them continue to be remembered by the producers who planted them and filled their silos with grain. Others transcended borders, becoming a source of admiration and recognition from Argentine and Paraguayan producers.
