Nelson Fernando Amezquita Varón, originally from Ibague, Colombia, is an agronomist from the University of Tolima with a master's degree in Agricultural Sciences with an emphasis on plant breeding from the National University of Colombia. He has participated in courses on genetics, hybrid production, molecular techniques for plant breeding, pre-breeding, as well as in various conferences as a speaker and participant.
He has held positions in research and development of the Clearfield® system for BASF Química Colombiana S.A., served as an advanced breeding coordinator for Semillas Valle S.A., and for the past 15 years, he has been part of the genetic improvement team at the National Federation of Rice Growers (Fedearroz), overseeing the Las Lagunas Experimental Center in the town of Saldaña. He coordinates the national breeding program of Fedearroz, funded by the National Rice Fund, focusing on the development of rice varieties and more recently, rice hybrids. He has conducted numerous studies on germplasm development and its agronomic management, along with continuous technology transfer activities for farmers, technicians, and students.
He has contributed as an author and co-author to several scientific articles related to genetic developments and pathology associated with genotype development.
