Biography

Julio Kalazich Barassi is an agronomist engineer from Universidad Austral de Chile with a PhD in Plant Breeding from Cornell University, USA. Between 1977 and 2018 he was a researcher at INIA and responsible for the potato breeding program, leading the registration of 13 varieties, some of which have a wide use by the Chilean consumer, and was advisor to the INIA certified seed potato production program. During his career, he was Regional Director of INIA Remehue, Osorno (2002-2010) for the regions of Los Lagos and Los Rios and between 2014 and 2018 he was National Director of INIA. He was Director of ACHIPA (2006-2008 and from 2024); member of the Advisory Board (2004-2014) and Chairman (2014-2016) of the McKnight Foundation Collaborative Agricultural Research Program; Vice-President of FONTAGRO (2017-2018); President of PROCISUR (2016-2017); Vice-President of ALAP (2012-2014 and 2023-2025) and since 2022 is a member of the International Advisory Board of the World Potato Congress Inc. and from 2023 member of the Board of the Chilean Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Currently, he teaches at the Agronomy Department of the Universidad de Los Lagos in Osorno, where he is in charge of Outreach and the courses of Agriculture I and Annual Crops (which includes Potato) and directs two research projects funded from public sources and 1 internal project of potato use in the industry funded by the University. During his work at INIA Chile, he directed numerous national and international potato research projects including several funded by FONTAGRO.
